System Components for Gantry Crane Communication

A gantry crane communication system can include several components depending on the crane configuration, terminal infrastructure, operating environment, and required communication points.


Crane Cab Hands-Free Communication Station: A fixed communication station installed at the crane operator's workstation provides a dedicated point for communicating with control rooms, ground personnel, maintenance teams, dispatchers, or other assigned destinations.
 

Gooseneck Microphone: A gooseneck microphone supports hands-free communication from the operator's workstation and can be selected based on the acoustic conditions inside the crane cab.
 

Foot Control (Foot Pedal): A foot-operated control can allow the crane operator to manage communication without reaching for a handset, helping keep the operator's hands available for normal crane operations.
 

External Horn Speaker: An external horn speaker can provide additional audio output where crane-cab noise or surrounding equipment makes communication difficult to hear.

3. 4G/LTE

Can be considered for cranes where fixed network cabling is unavailable, difficult to route, or impractical, provided adequate cellular coverage is available.

4. Hybrid Communication

  • Network Infrastructure: For SIP/VoIP installations, check Ethernet availability, PoE requirements, network configuration, VLAN/firewall policies, QoS, and SIP/PBX compatibility.

  • Cellular Coverage: For 4G/LTE systems, verify cellular signal strength and determine a suitable antenna location based on the crane structure and operating environment.
     

  • Cable Routing: Consider crane movement, cable travel, mechanical protection, and the routing path between the operator cab and fixed communication infrastructure.
